Thousands were sent to Nazi concentration camps where they were identified by a pink triangle. 'When Hitler took power in 1933, he launched a campaign to persecute gay people. In the 1980s-90s the now correctly converted pink triangle was the emblem for life and death during the AIDS epidemic. The inverted pink triangle was adopted and flipped right-side-up by the modern LGBTQ community during the Gay Rights Movement in the 1970s. => Hamilton AIDS Network for Dialogue and Support (HANDS) The queer community resiliently flips negative symbols and jargon into shameless pride.
